case Please describe briefly any suggestions to improve, creat...
1 Encourage another supermarket.
5 subsidised rates, push tourism to get people to visit, seasonal events
16 strict controls over the appearance of the shops/businesses on the main street, looks count, shabby shops do not create a good environment.
18 It is very difficult opening a shop and being able to make a small profit in a town like silsden. People look but prefer to go to larger towns or cities. Having a dedicated website to introduce people to the advantages of tourism in in and around silsden  and what the area has to offer could work  quite well. Why not open the old mill at the bottom of Howden road which houses the old steam engine ? it could perhaps be opened either one or twice a month if the owners would allow this.
24 Maybe a market or farmers market. This would encourage people into the village and possible increase people shopping in the village
28 Move all industry to one area, ie industrial estate close to by-pass.
36 Traffic calming through the centre of Silsden.
40 A Marina development, this would attract both employment and visitors and give the town life, whout too much alteration to Silsden
41 i have already written about a market , farmers market maybe?
42 Canal trade , sunday market
43 I would like a proper indoor swimming pool and an outdoor athletics track which would attract schools, coaches, encourage adults to exercise, create admin and managerial jobs. Something for the community and to encourage people to Silsden.
49 Develop Silsden as a tourist destination and attraction for passing boat traffic.
54 Stop the parking on the side of the main street, to increase traffic flow and stop congestion by lorries unable to get through.
62 Reduce business rates on retail property
63 Although I am in favour of small businesses I prefer not to see any more takeaway food outlets as there are sufficient.
65 There would have to be adequate parking facilities
76 Lower rates
101 We certainly don't want large factories or businesses that will encourage pollution and immigrant workers. Unfortunately I don't see any Benifit Bradford has seen in recent years with the influx of European migrants.
105 Small traders to occupy any empty premises. No building of new companies on ANY green belt land.
106 Bigger Supermarket or retail facilities
108 Keep it attractive!
109 I know, from personal experience, that there is a shortage of small workshop units in the area.  The vacant site on the left of the main road, as one approaches from the dual carriageway, which is covered in billboards and 'To Let' signs, is a real eyesore as one enters the village.  Perhpas financial incentives or other measure would help to encourage small businesses to take up units here if they were built.
115 Sited arts festival?
118 cheaper supermarket the coop is o.k however its very expensive so we have to travel to keighley to do our monthly shop.
120 Any business wishing to setup a new business would need to employ a persentage of local staff, unless there's good reason not to. Why do we need / have so many takeaways...? Surely they can't all be profitable?
190 Build a by-pass around Silsden and then encourage tourism.
199 Do not approve any more take away food shops!!
200 tourism through canal usage
210 Too many hairdressers. Need more variety of small businesses. Naylor Myers in in an awkward location - should be moved to the industrial estate to allow it to expand.
211 Improve opportunities on the waterways.
217 Reduce the business rates for small shopkeepers
218 A leisure centre with a swimming pool.
219 Due to the good road/train links these should be advertised to businesses as positive reason to base themselves here.
222 Two words: tax breaks.
234 encourage more of the businesses in the town to take on people for work experience with the view to possible employment
236 Because of the road infrastructure it is difficult to want to expand Silsden, of course employment opportunities are very welcome, but the roads can't cope with extra traffic and actually Silsden is already bursting at the seems and is becoming a sprawl. With green fields and gardens being over developed.
251 Keep it clean and the streets free of dog fouling.
254 Services provided for businesses not so good.  Post office is over-stretched and now only one bank which isn't open everyday.  Parking provision for people working in Silsden.  Access to station is bad for pedestrians could do with pedestrian footway. of dual carriageway to get to station.
260 farmers market
282 Silsdens own museum. nails, motorbikes. rayon.  we have much to be proud of
283 Make access better ideally a by-pass with business park.
286 Need a variety of businesses apart from hair/nail salons and estate agents. Lack of banking facilities unhelpful now Barclays has gone and Natwest only open 3 days a week.
292 Provide better access to the town either better parkin g facilities or better public transport
296 Encourage local employees to advertise locally before extending advertising. Provide a vibrant cyber cafe for all age groups. Provide town hall work shop area for employers to show off their businesses to as many as possible. Encourage employers to liaise with schools to prepare children to be fit for the work place - local careers officers to be actively looking in local areas.
303 Development should be looked on the edge of town with incentives to redevelop the 'brown areas' which are just left bare and do not seem appealing to anyone coming into the area.  If employment is brought to Silsden then it will encourage town regeneration as people spend more in the town centre. Currently people do not spend money in the centre of town as there is limited employment in the area.  Look at the potential for leisure facilities as this would encourage families to come to the area and spend time in the centre during the day as well as in a swimming pool.
312 Childrens indoor play area with cafe and parking on the derelict land opposite/near habasit Ensure that current employers in industrial area stay open
317 create a walkway from the railway station to the town
331 Get rid of the 'tired' and 'scruffy' unkept feel of the town.
340 supermarket needed
346 Tidy up the empty shop fronts and do something about the area outside the takeaways next to the Picture Framing shop - its unsafe and looks awful.
349 Decent parking with sensible time frames is essential for 'owners' and customers and not at the usual exorbitant rates or worrying about clamping/fines if few mins late.
353 More low-cost facilities for small local businesses - e.g. business units.  There is limited availability of storage/workshop areas in Silsden and costs are very high.
366 A better supermarket that has more competative prices than the co op
369 Not needed
374 I truly believe that another cheaper supermarket would benefit Silsden. Not only employment but also bringing people to the town and most of all helping those with very little income be able to buy quality produce at a reasonable price. The co-op is far to expensive an travelling to a neighbouring town to shop amounts o the same, but if you have no choice like we do it can mean the difference of £20-£30 a week for food.
379 get rid of all the fast food takeaways
383 GET TESCO IN
390 More retail shops - less take-a-ways!
393 Do not alow the development of a tescos - it will destroy what is left of the high street..
401 development of canalside facilities and information boards about local shops, pubs and restaurants
409 Concentrate on attracting high-tech businesses
410 a well kept clean and vibrant village will improve opportunities in Silsden
412 Not many of the businesses have their own website. This is really the way to get visitors outside Silsden using their services.
414 Do not allow large supermarkets. Keep the industrial area for industrial use and do not allow retail
421 help and advertisment for our local buisness,s
423 Re development of brownfield site (belmont silks mill) at the bottom of SIlsden. Something other than industrial units, maybe houses, a school, swimming pool etc
429 We need shops not takeaways.
431 None.
439 Grocers and greengrocers needed in Main Steer, sadly the 15 textile mills have gone. Life was easier when people could work locally. Lots of children only see dad's at weekend owing to commuting every day, Silsden is no longer the place I knew in 1934  when I left school to work in the mill.
448 To maintain local independent shops, there should be no new supermarkets.
456 Keep Silsden clean and well maintained e.g. beck, beck walls and streets free from dog fouling.
460 Sort out the derelict brown field sites on Keighley Road... An eyesore entry to town.
461 Would you be able to create a vacancy page on the Silsden website for local companies to place adverts for current vacancies they are looking for suitable candidates for.
470 Generate links with universities/knowledge transfer partnerships. Networking event with local employers for local people. Local jobs advertised centrally on message board. Silsden employers groups on networking sites - LinkedIn etc.
472 May be something other than hairdresser?! Use of unused allotment areas for community projects. More outdoors based activities (guided walks etc.). Child/family friendly places - restaurant/eatery very close to centre and park would be idea.
489 Realistic business rates so shops can carry on trading.
491 Stop letting Asians take over our small businesses, we live in Britain not India!
493 Reduce takeaways. We needs different variety – we've got a lot of the same. Maybe get unemployed to take pride in making areas clean and tidy and cared for.
494 Encourage small business by keeping business rates low and keeping free/very cheap parking.
496 Better roads.
529 Extend the M606 all the way up this valley to the M6 at Kendal. Link this valley direct to M65 at Colne. Better access to motorways equals more jobs, industry, distribution.
536 Less takeaways - we don't need so many pubs. A cafe/general restaurant.
540 Many businesses opening in Silsden should prioritise local people for employment.
541 Bins along the canal towpath.
554 Use Brown Field sites and derelict/unused building.
556 Less dog poo.
563 No comment.
567 Promoting Silsden as a great place to live and by definition work. Easy to get to Leeds/Manchester motorways etc. but also great countryside dales/lakes.
571 Are all the first floor spaces used above shops/businesses to create a lived in feel to Main Streets?
573 Produce a bypass around Silsden. Produce incentives. Create a business park.
574 Building small industrial units for let on currently unoccupied Brownfield sites.
578 Keep rates low for small businesses.
579 This is always a difficult problem in small villages/towns – the only scope for any potential employment would be to improve the small retail outlets on the high street – in particular, there are a couple of empty ones at the moment, which may provide a small opportunity for jobs. Also, there seem to be too many food takeouts, which may benefit from different specialist retailers i.e. gifts, delicatessens etc.
580 The rental price of units on Belmont Road is far higher than other areas of West Yorkshire. Would be nice to have a green grocers.
583 Encourage large business to Silsden to take on industrial units at low rental costs to encourage more employment opportunities.
588 Allow another supermarket to operate in the town - competition for the Co-op and employment for the locals.
594 Make small units affordable.
598 Reduced rates for new enterprises.
602 Tourism - walking holidays.
605 Enterprise zones - small industrial units - low or nil rental of small industrial units - look outside the Silsden area to attract business to Silsden.
608 Give small businesses low cost access to retail shops/offices in town centre not an increase in charity shops and/or takeaway businesses.
610 Lower business rates, rents etc. for first year of business giving them a head start, encourage any business start up, other than takeaways, hairdressers and the like.
611 No Tesco or Asda. Another supermarket would destroy what is left of the Silsden Main St. The Co-op will suffice for a small town. All the major supermarkets have branches and choice within 3-4 miles.
618 We are a village lets keep it that way.
626 A loop road around the village would give access to various areas for future development of business properties.
627 To support small business to encourage more employment.
632 To encourage more tourism, small hotels and B & B and less takeaway shops.
679 Redevelop and refurbish existing sites.
680 Tax breaks for small, new businesses.
688 Utilise any existing empty units or brown sites.
689 Keep small shops going and more charity shops.
696 Anything is better than nothing.
699 Have more small shops opening instead of takeaways, fast food outlets.
718 Ask bright out of work young people.
720 All the above improvements will help employment opportunity.
724 More trees round present units.
732 A comprehensive school light engineering.
734 We no longer have any decent shops mainly takeaways, that would be an advantage, no one shops here anymore. The Co-op is the only one and prices there are over the top.
737 Lower rates on property would help. But please no more charity shops.
739 Manufacturing. Small engineering. Lets have something productive in the town, as it used to be. Get it busy again. Not just service jobs.
742 Habisat want to expand there business which is good for the area but not where they want to do it. Why not use the space across the road that is for sale and has buildings on already. Green spaces should be protected not built on when there are other options available nearby.
745 I agree strongly that employment is needed but I am very wary of the kind of employment. We already have a large area of retail units some unused. We have small industrial units which have an impact on residential areas which is not good. There are quite a lot of small businesses which are run by non Silsden residents which is also not a good thing.
746 We need another supermarket to compete with the Co-op due to the Co-ops prices being too high and having the monopoly forcing people to shop outside the area.
747 Encourage local employers to advertise locally before extending advertising. Provide a vibrant cyber café for all age groups. Provide town hall work shop area for employers to show off their businesses to as many as possible. Encourage employers to liaise with schools to prepare children to be fit for the work place - local careers officers to be actively looking in local area.
751 A leisure centre and I would be glad to help set it up.
755 A wider range of retail outlets that would come from increased emphasis in tourism, the canal is under used. Limit the number of hairdressers and beauticians. Lower rents and leases if possible. Maximise the potential of the remaining [?]. Mill complex - houses a rare vertical beam engine. Attract large IT business (like Pace at Saltire).
757 Employment must be very important to the village. I would not be so keen if a new business brought in its employees from outside the village (unless they relocated to live there).
759 Using the canal area - developing canal side with café and other canal facilities for narrow boat users etc. Improving towpath through Silsden. Enforcing dog muck regulations. Installing dog bins.
760 No more takeaways in Silsden.
761 Encourage businesses to advertise positions rather than just in-house vacancies.
762 Cleaning ex-factory sites. Improve first sight of Silsden from the bypass.
763 Banks etc. More superstores. More businesses.
767 Use of unoccupied site on Keighley Road.
770 I can think of absolutely none.
773 Major supermarket, swimming baths needs building to create jobs and a leisure centre for people to use 7 days a week.
775 Empty buildings and shops to be offered at attractive rates.
778 An art club for young people.
781 Support teenagers there is a lack of jobs.
782 I think a short term reduction in rates over 6-12 months period could make staring a new business easier and more likely to succeed.
783 Regular market trading with fresh produce (local).
790 If you really want to attract more tourism, there needs to be tourist attractions. As I see it the only attraction at present are the ducks on the weir and seats under the willows. The library gardens and bandstand are attractive too. I don’t think we should be trying to be a tourist attraction, just make Silsden have an improving environment for its inhabitants. Some cleaning up of the desolate areas.
796 More shops, supermarkets.
800 Improved road link - bypass.
807 Help for people setting business up in Silsden.
813 There are many hair salons and eateries. Variety is essential in order to attract the populous of surrounding communities, affordable parking and choice – catering for  most needs would encourage people away from bigger towns – in turn, this would bring custom to businesses offered within. Taking care, however, to keep the integrity of a small, discreetly cared for, community.
819 Most people commute to work. We do not want to see Silsden become another industrialised small town/village which eventually blends with Keighley or Steeton. It is a very pleasant place to live please keep it so.
840 To keep Silsden clean. Parking only in car parks. Cut back over hanging bushes on pavements etc.
845 Clothes shop. Indoor swimming pool.
848 Would like to see more jobs for the over sixties in existing businesses.
850 Council should encourage small businesses back into the main street rather than the higher than average level of takeaways.
854 Use existing unused sites before encroaching on fields and flood plains.
860 keeping Silsden clean.
870 More business i.e. fruit and veg shop.
873 We need a small supermarket for competition with CO-OP.
875 Get young people to paint an empty shop out and get someone to sell 2nd hand computers they upgrade.
879 Silsden requires another supermarket to compete with the Co-operative which is the only one. Another petrol station would be useful.
880 Cheaper business rates.
884 Improve public toilets and open 24hrs. Silsden is surrounded by fields. New naturist static caravan site would attract people from faraway places. They would buy houses, open new businesses here. That would give new opportunities for employment and put Silsden on the map.
885 Make more of the canal, development of craft units around the canal.
887 Create areas with very low rateable costs with dedicated parking for staff.
891 A tourist information facility. Museum of town history, canals, mills, businesses, building, people.
892  Shops need to be let/sold to other businesses other than takeaways.
896 Build a larger supermarket that would create more jobs as the Co-op is too expensive, most people who have cars go to larger supermarkets to do their weekly shop
900 Smaller, more communal spaces where independent people could have a base to work from paying a low rental fee, this would form a collaborative collective of tradesmen, operatives, professionals and retailers who could service the local and wider area alike.
902 Would need to carefully monitor traffic through town so industrial units on Belton Road need separate access from dual carriageway. Large traffic having to access from here and no entry to lorries through Silsden.
910 Better traffic control.
914 Stop opposing new developments. Try to improve mix of retail businesses, what about attracting larger employers?
922 We should try to set up technical or engineering units to use a lot of the skills that used to be in the Keighley area.
926 Keep all industries that need premises into one areas, such as an industrial estate close to the bypass. Give business rates reduction to all that move into industrial estate. Advertise all local employment opportunities in one place i.e. Town Hall, library, post office.
932 Low start up rates until business become viable.
936 Units with high speed internet connections. Possibly eco-friendly with solar panels.
937 Encourage and support development of small local businesses. Encourage school leavers to seek employment in Silsden, and offer opportunities to them.
938 Market 1 day a week.
940 Another supermarket to attract new employment for local people.
941 Dog wardens. Litter warden - good employment.
948 Evening/daytime classes in partnership with local collages. Like we use to have. A Supermarket e.g. Tesco/Asda on the land on Belton Road would provide employment opportunities.
952 Reduce rents on small businesses. Bigger supermarket. Bigger school, which was supposed to go ahead late 60's, so Silsden children didn’t have to travel to Cross Hills.
953 More small business units for public use - wool/hobbies, garden centre, ice cream parlour.
956 Need a small supermarket.
965 Build a new supermarket to the south of the village. This would be used by people from Silsden and Steeton and most nearby villages.
973 Make Kirkgate no parking but provide more parking areas.
974 As we have only one small supermarket at the top of the town is it possible a small outlet food etc. would be viable maybe on the approach into town (where the mills were) thus creating jobs and competition.
980 A street market at weekends or indoor market at town hall.
984 Different shops. Better parking.
987 WE could persuade Barclays to reopen its branch. Or encourage another major bank to compete with NatWest.
988 Resist any further supermarkets. Encourage local business association.
994 What about encouraging walking and biking. Maybe have somewhere for maps, local walks/bike hire.
998 Important to maintain the feel of the town as small and intimate.
999 Second supermarket. Little Morrison's like in Ilkley.
1001 improved transport connectivity. Good environment.
1002 Tax incentives and government grant/finding initiatives. Advertise area/promote transport links. Ensure appropriate accommodation was available for various business types. Put business needs before housing needs.
1003 Cap rates accordingly.
1007 More publicity for Silsden businesses.
1020 Another small supermarket.
1024 No suggestions.
1029 Increase small business and retail outlets to provide job opportunities.
1060 Bring in another supermarket.
1065 This, I have no idea about, not having been in business, not having had any experience of how to deal with business (apart from working in them a long time ago!).
1073 Anything that brings money into Silsden.
1085 Lowering rents.
1088 Improved parking. Advertising of area, skills and staff availability. Does anyone know of skilled people (unemployed or looking for change in career). Available/affordable housing. Sing praises of local schools.
1091 Road maintenance. Bypass. Off street parking.
1093 Less takeaway outlets. Encourage local produce - fishmongers, farmer market etc. Gift shops.
1094 Larger company incentives to employ local people in all areas, unskilled to highly skilled - using existing buildings and industrial land rather than building on fields on outskirts of town.
1095 Perhaps a Tesco in the former Courtlands Mill? Maybe a Wetherspoons in the 'Bridge'?
